In April 2025, The Pinkerton Raid's singer-songwriter Jesse James DeConto was visiting his grandfather's birthplace in Sicily when he started hearing about ICE surges like the one that took Kilmar Abrego Garcia from his wife and four disabled children in Maryland and sent him to the megaprison in El Salvador, the same country he had fled for fear of gang violence as a teenager.

"Strawberry Ice (and the World Burns)" is the song that came out of learning to make Italian ice, or 'granita,' in Sicily and reflecting on Jesse's own immigrant story.
